Biography
Just imagine,
Hummable vocals with introspective lyrics. Music that floats between noise-explosions and electro with guitars... Melodic jazzy bass parts, a dash of funk, a pinch of jazz, all on a bed of solid rock.
The recipe? Classical? A band with two guitars, drums, bass, keyboards and a singer. Rock? okay, usually. Alternative? probably... Stoner...? perhaps. Electro? sometimes. Noise? Pop? We call it Compliments for your Coffee.
The PopEI website on CfyC at the bandmarathon: "I can imagine that not every inhabitant of Rockcity will like Compliments for your Coffee. The band is in fact kind of weird in an art rock-esque way (yep, "art rock-esque" ...). This is often synonymous with 'affected', but in this band I believe in it. Peculiar, long tracks with tempting bass parts and almost childlike synth parts contribute to a musical collage that is brought by an equally strange band. I like it as much as I find it strange, and I hope they continue."
History
After an encounter at a by now legendary coffee machine Robbert and Nicole talked about their favourites, dEUS, Zita Swoon, and soon joked they could start a band together. Robbert already had some years of experience on the stage, performing his own songs. Six months later it appeared no joke, they met again and decided to combine Robbert's amazingly beautiful melodies with Nicole's poems.
The album 'Destination: Sofa followed after 1 1/2 years in 2003. Fascinations and frustrations are thrown around on this attempt to self-therapy. A quest from bashfulness to rampant fantasy and from pent-up anger to terrible tenderness. Where poetry and melody explore, challenge and stimulate each other.
In the mean time, CfyC had expanded with a number of musical talents, each with a different musicla background. The main influences are pop, rock, jazz, blues, folk and electro. Usually this combination turns into non-especially-easy-listening music. The songs are experimental / alternative with an ever-changing character / atmosphere.
In 2007, the now 6-man strong band recorded a second album, titled 'No More Arguments'. The introspective and subdued songs of the previous album have now partially made way to a more eclectic and electronic sound, still based on the well-known melodies and poems for which CfyC is known.
The make-up of the band changed in 2009 whem Marc Dankers left the band to focus on his other two bands; 'Throat Wobbler Mangrove' and 'Beroerde Broeders'. Shortly after, a new guitarist, Jeroen IJff, joined the band to make up the loss.
Currently, the band is working on new material and gigs around the Netherlands now & then.
